A massive congratulations to our Elkesley based rowers, the Plevin Supremes, who took second place in the Phase Worldwide charity dragon boat race over the weekend at Manvers Lake near Rotherham. The event was being held in aid of the charities Phase Worldwide and The Manvers Lake Trust.
Having had no practice prior to the race, the Plevin Supremes found themselves up against 9 other teams with the task of racing custom built 30ft brightly painted Chinese dragon boats along a 200m course. Windy conditions meant that the waters on the lake were choppy and at times proved hazardous -two boats capsized during the races and one of the boats was left without a dragons head!
Undeterred, the team took to the oars and got off to a fantastic start, winning their first race and bringing in some fast times in their next two races. The Plevin Supremes went into the semi-finals with the 3rd fastest overall time and powered through to take a comfortable win in the semi-final.
With medals in sight and a place on the podium, Plevin Supremes boarded their boat for a final time with true grit and determination. Battling it out with the opposing team, Plevin Supremes took the lead initially, then were neck and neck to the finish line but had the hands of victory snatched from them by a mere 0.4 seconds to take the silver medals.
Well done to the team who raised over £1000 for the charities and a huge thank you to those that came down on the day to support the teams, it was greatly appreciated.
